A Potential Method for Identifying Minerals in Comet Samples Using Raman Spectroscopy with a Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope

چکیده

The NASA Stardust mission to comet Wild2 returned to Earth in 2006 with an aerogel collector containing trapped cometary particles. The cometary particles were captured at a relative velocity of 6.1 km/s, creating three-dimensional (3D) tracks containing compressed aerogel, melted aerogel, fragmented cometary material, and void space [1]. Each track represents a unique hypervelocity impact event that stores information on the nature of the impact, including the state of the original impactor, in the 3D morphology and material distribution along the track.

A handheld laser scanning confocal reflectance imaging–confocal Raman microspectroscopy system

Confocal reflectance microscopy and confocal Raman spectroscopy have shown potential for non-destructive analysis of samples at micron-scale resolutions. Current studies utilizing these techniques often employ large bench-top microscopes, and are not suited for use outside of laboratory settings. We have developed a microscope which combines laser scanning confocal reflectance imaging and confo...

Raman Spectroscopic Techniques for Planetary Exploration: Detecting Microorganisms through Minerals.

Raman spectroscopy can provide highly specific chemical fingerprints of inorganic and organic materials and is therefore expected to play a significant role in interplanetary missions, especially for the search for life elsewhere in our solar system. A major challenge will be the unambiguous detection of low levels of biomarkers on a mineral background. In addition, these biomarkers may not be ...

A RIGOROUS COMPARISON OF METHODS FOR MULTI-WALLED CARBON NANOTUBES PURIFICATION USING RAMAN SPECTROSCOPY

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT’s) were synthesized using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method in a fluidized bed reactor under the flow of methane and hydrogen gases. A Cobalt-molybdenum/magnesium oxide (Co-Mo/MgO) nanocatalyst was used as the catalyst of the process. The samples were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The effects of d...

Time resolved Raman spectroscopy for depth analysis of multi - layered mineral samples Chapter 3 3

Time Resolved Raman Spectroscopy (TRRS) can provide subsurface information from multi-layered samples of transparent and translucent evaporative and silicate minerals up to several cm thick. Depth information was obtained using 3-ps pulsed laser excitation at 720 nm and a gated intensified CCD detector with stepwise increasing delay times. Blocks of different minerals were used as first, second...

Identification of Stardust Analogs in Aerogel Using Raman Spectroscopy

Introduction: In 2006, NASA’s Stardust mission returned a capsule to Earth with particles collected from the coma of comet 81P/Wild 2. Cometary particles were collected by impact into low-density silica aerogel at a relative velocity of 6.1 km/s [1]. Upon impacting the aerogel, particles left behind tracks of melted and compressed aerogel and void space, shedding material along the way. In orde...
